Terra con variazioni
Giovanni Sollima’s homage to Dante’s anniversary takes the form of a real musical polyptych. Indeed, his Six Studies on Dante’s Infernofor counter-tenor, choir and orchestra are like the six panels of a large altarpiece: the first is a sort of contrafactum of Luzzasco Luzzaschi’s famous madrigal “Quivi sospiri ed alti guai”, from Canto III. The second is a setting of “Io ero tra color che son sospesi”, from Canto II, scored for counter-tenor, while the third, inspired by Canto XXV, moves in perfect homorhythm. The fourth study, based on Canto V, “Nessun maggior dolore”, alternates choir and counter-tenor solos in responsorial form. Finally, the last two studies are based on verses from Canto XXV, set to music with extreme metrical freedom.
