Born and raised in the city of Liverpool when the Beatles made their debut, Sir Simon Rattle, like them, has become a true English icon in the world of classical music. In 2002 he succeeded Claudio Abbado at the helm of the Berlin Philharmonic, where he remained for sixteen years before returning to England to become Music Director of the London Symphony Orchestra, a title previously held only by Abbado himself. His debut in Ravenna on the podium of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe is therefore a milestone, with a programme that spans the artistic seasons of Central Europe: from Schubert’s grandiose Classical works to Dvořák’s impetuous Romanticism and on to the 20th century, inaugurated by Mahl’s Rückert-Lieder and Bartók’s ethnographic explorations.
