In 2019, Gilberto Cappelli visited the Fattoria Guiccioli for the annual celebration of the death of Ana Maria de Jesus Ribeiro, the heroine of the two worlds. Here he could see the unique devotion that the people of Romagna still have for this woman who, together with Garibaldi, passionately dedicated her short life to the ideals of freedom. Now Cappelli returns to the place that inspired his first opera. An old farm-museum provides a setting for a prologue and eight scenes, which, the author states, are “permeated by a sound that is lacerating, rough, hoarse, dirty, dark and violent, and yet must be played and sung in an expressive and poetic way”: from the accidental discovery of Anita’s body, the story flashes back to her life in South America and Europe, her loves, her family, politics, war, escapes, and the “trafila“, Garibaldi’s adventurous escape through the countryside and hills of Romagna.
