Discovered in the basement of the Church of St Euphemia, the Domus of the Stone Carpets exemplifies the relationship between ‘below’ and ‘above’, the typical ascent/descent pattern so often found in mythical, religious and literary traditions. Traditional cosmologies often suggest a multi-layered universe, each layer representing a different sphere of being. This implies a vertical axis along which a ‘downward’ and an ‘upward’ direction can be distinguished, with a clear distinction between ‘below’ and ‘above’. Against a background of mysterious mosaic patterns and accompanied by the Corelli Ensemble, Camilla Berardi will lend her voice to texts by Homer, Ovid, Virgil, Paul of Tarsus and Dante, who found in Jacob’s Ladder the emblem of this movement of the spirit and of life: the descent into hell and the ascent to heaven.
