In templo Domini – Liturgies in the Basilicas
Cappella Musicale della Basilica di San Francesco
choirmaster Giuliano Amadei
Messa in do maggiore di Baldassarre Galuppi
music by Antonio Vivaldi, Michelangelo Grancini, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Georg Friedrich Händel
Like cities, churches and rituals can become invisible: for years the Ravenna Festival has been reviving the rich tradition of liturgies that have echoed through the centuries in the city’s exquisite basilicas. This year’s programme aims to highlight the excellence of vocal music and the extraordinary quality of the guests, such as The King’s Singers and the Salomone Rossi Ensemble, but also to recognise and honour the many people in our city who are committed to spreading and reviving the boundless heritage of Mass music. It was also decided, with the agreement of the Archdiocese, to celebrate two of the liturgies in the basilicas of San Giovanni Evangelista and Sant’Agata Maggiore, some of the most beautiful and ancient in the city, no longer used for regular worship.
