Italian premiere (Part III)

Conceived as a triptych the first part of which took place in the “enchanted castle” of Palazzo Malagola, Don Chisciotte ad ardere now chooses Theodoric’s palace as the setting for its second chapter, a castle in ruins, followed by an ancient building (a church? a theatre?) to complete a reworking of Don Quixote for our century, torn by wars and injustices not unlike the world that Cervantes’ gentle dreamer railed against. The ‘errants’ are now led by two shabby magicians, Hermanita and Marcus: but their magic wands are blunt, and all they can do is conjure up the ghosts of three actors who have spent their lives playing the roles of Don Quixote, Sancho Panza and Dulcinea del Toboso, along with hundreds of townspeople. What is real? What is dream? What is prophecy?
