The inspiration comes from the performer himself, and the instrument becomes the heart and mind of the composition. That’s what happens in Berio’s solo Sequenzas for accordion and double bass. The first was composed for Teodoro Anzellotti, whose talent led Berio to explore “the popular experiences that inhabit the accordion”: “Italo Calvino would call Chanson ‘a memory conjugated in the future’, considering thee ever-increasing importance of this instrument”. The second piece is the result of a collaboration with Stefano Scodanibbio, and revisits Sequenza XIV, originally written for cello. Duo Aria will also perform a work by Francesca Verunelli, which brings together the two extremes of sound: the sound of the instrument, produced by the musician’s body, and the sound of the electronic device, coming from the dark recesses of a machine.
