The great African festival
The Torraccia of the port of Candiano was built as a defensive outpost to spot enemies approaching from the sea. Interestingly, today its walls look out over the sea with confidence, ready to welcome a festival of colours, dances, cultures and languages united in friendship. Fatoumata Diawara is the musical embodiment of the new Africa, fearlessly open to the world. A versatile singer-songwriter with a deep devotion to her ancestors, she mixes musical styles with an ease that has been noticed and supported by Damon Albarn of Blur. Yet, she continues to sing to help her homeland and to overcome all forms of inequality. Just like the Franco-Moroccan Bab L’Bluz, whose blend of traditional Gnawa music and rock is both liberating and ecumenical, paving an ideal path for us all to follow.
