British jazz was not alone in being affected by the musical and human story of South African jazz in its European exile, which has also enthralled the Italian jazz avant-garde ever since the Seventies. The MinAfric Orchestra, conducted by Pino Minafra and his son, Livio, is noted for being especially keen on the poetics of the South African diaspora, which resulted in a strong relationship with Louis Moholo. Their For Mandela project, conceived in 2014 for the Talos Festival in Puglia, gathered Moholo with two emblematic figures of the new British scene of the ’60s, Keith and Julie Tippett, to interpret scores by Blue Notes, Keith Tippett and Minafra (Canto General, for Pablo Neruda), in a spirit of awesomeness and civil passion.
