What is a ghost? Edith Wharton asks this question in her last collection of short stories, entitled Ghosts. A ghost is a shadow, an aura, a mysterious figure that we fear because it comes from an unknown world or a distant time. Ghosts connect us to our final threshold, death, but also to the depths of our being. With a musical score that transports us to another world and a focus on elusive images that gradually take the form of the protagonists of five stories, Fanny & Alexander explore the twilight zone where reality and mystery meet. Through startling apparitions, dramatic twists and subtle anxieties, the universe of Wharton’s stories on which the show is based questions us about the meaning of the end of life, nostalgia, regret, remorse, fear and love of the unseen.
