“He departed from our sight, that we might return to our heart, and there to find Him. For He departed, and behold, He is here”. St Augustine’s paradox (Confessions, IV, 12.19) captures the full power of sacred music: He whom it celebrates in the Ascension, in the gift of the Spirit, in the eternal loving relationship of Father, Son and Holy Spirit, “is here”. In templo Domini offers the opportunity to experience sacred music in a new way, bringing it back into its original context with the help of skilled choirs and expert officiants. If we take the ritual – words, gestures, silences, spaces, scents… – as a framework for interpretation, the melodies of Palestrina, Tallis and other composers will reveal their full depth, opening our inner selves to the possibility that what is essential, invisible to the eye, is waiting to be heard and found in each of us.
