Balletto di Roma
La dernière danse?
by Micha van Hoecke
to music from the jukebox of time
re-staging curated by Miki Matsuse
Italian premiere
Does La dernière danse? contain all of Micha van Hoecke’s memory? Or all of his memories? In 1984, the Russian-Belgian choreographer used this piece as the curtain-raiser for a long Italian career with his Ensemble. In it, he was already exploring what would become his favourite themes: the present and the past, the wild years of youth, a cloud of nostalgia and a hint of regret. Now, four years after his death, the show is back on stage thanks to Miki Matsuse, his partner in art and life, and now the faithful heir to his creations. She has restaged the work for the Balletto di Roma, passing on the company’s legacy and the memory of a distant, vibrant and revolutionary era to today’s young performers. Transmitted through musical empathy with the rhythms and voices of the Golden Sixties, from the Platters to Leo Ferré.
