Giuseppe Verdi and Giuseppina Strepponi were already living together when they saw La Dame aux Camélias, a play by Alexandre Dumas fils, in Paris. Legend has it that Strepponi, a refined lady of the Parisian beau monde, was so moved that she couldn’t stop crying: indeed, she may have recognised in the play’s tormented love story her own relationship with Verdi, which defied malice and social conventions. Dumas’s play may also have been the inspiration for Verdi’s Traviata, an opera whose genesis Alessio Boni now reconstructs through the letters exchanged between Giuseppina and her “adored monster”, Giuseppe. Their passionate correspondence sums up the sentimental education of Verdi, a “peasant” who could not resist the call of beauty.
