A celebratory momentum pervades Haydn’s Te Deum, and seems to sum up the confident look at the future of this “friendship” concert, its solemn gesture of joy and hope. Hope is necessary, now more than ever, and finds its fullest expression in sacred music, regardless of creed or doctrine. Hope that binds our small, daily, individual desires to a universal longing for the sake of mankind: this is the hope that vibrates in Haydn’s serene and rational religiosity. But also in the rich score of Mozart’s ‘Munich’ Kyrie, composed in Germany and notable for its chromatic nuances and opulent instrumentation. The same hope inspires the Mass composed by young Schubert in less than a week: tender and delicate, creating the proper mood for contemplation and prayer.
