The presence of Les Étoiles in this year’s program is hardly surprising: for several years the renowned international dance gala has been bringing its “tesserae” of solos and pas de deux to the city of mosaics. What may come as a surprise, however, is the description, commonly used in perfume branding: “pour homme”. With a few drops of spirit, this special edition – making its debut at the Ravenna Festival – will immerse the audience in a more unusual, but no less intoxicating scent, in which the dominant olfactory note will be male dance with its alluring accord of strength and elegance. If the great choreographer George Balanchine famously claimed that ‘Ballet is woman’ (and historically it would be difficult to argue that), today Apollo and Dionysus, symbolising the two souls of dance, achieve absolute parity alongside Terpsichore.
