Variations and Fugue in B-flat major on a theme by Handel, Op. 24
At just 25 years of age, Pietro Fresa is one of the most interesting pianists on the Italian scene, who proposes an unusual repertoire for today’s virtuosos, shedding a very personal light on his choice of Mozart’s piano music (like the Twelve Variations on the French song Ah, vous dirai-je Maman, a favourite of pianists such as Clara Haskil and Samson François). Fresa’s performance combines Chopin’s nostalgia for the Polish countryside and the frenetic anxieties of Scriabin’s “Black Mass” Sonata with another set of variations, which Brahms composed on a theme by Handel: twenty-five miniatures of incredible subtlety, capable of competing with Bach’s Goldberg Variations as well as Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations.
