A tightrope walker balancing rap, jazz and hip-hop
A slightly damaged tower still stands tall, brazenly mocking the passage of time and welcoming the Italian ambassador of a successful and unusual musical idea. The idea is that jazz is just a way of making songs sound even better. The old days when improvisation was based on the most popular, best known tunes from overseas variety shows may be long gone, but this stylistic approach also works well for the songs we now call ‘pop’. Raphael Gualazzi has been a prime example of this for twenty years: a man who can flirt with hip-hop as well as ragtime, injecting the swaying warmth of swing with the “turbulence” that rages on the radio.
