In the international language Esperanto, Orelon means ear. It is therefore very likely that the musicians who have chosen to come together under this name are inviting us to expand our listening horizons. The same invitation can be found in their choice of Anton Arensky’s First Trio, perhaps the most ‘symphonic’ composition ever written for this formation, a veritable manifesto of late Russian Romanticism in the transitional period between Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov. The programme also includes the classical roots of the Trio for violin, cello and piano: Haydn’s No. 18 and Beethoven’s No. 7, known as the Archduke’s Trio for its dedication to Archduke Rudolf, the lucky recipient of one of the German composer’s most monumental pieces for chamber music.
